The village of Xewkija
Gozo’s oldest village is dominated by the church dedicated to St John the Baptist, whose dome is one of the world’s highest unsupported domes. This is certainly one of Gozo’s landmarks and can be seen from many parts of the island.
Xewkija is derived from the word ‘xewk’, Maltese for thorns. The coat of arms consists of a gold background with a red horizontal strip between two thorns, one above and one below. This village is quite popular for its master stonemasons and craftsmen, as evidenced in the intricate designs of many houses.
