9 Things to do in Victoria

There’s more than meets the eye, in Gozo’s main town.

The Citadel and Cathedral

Any visit to Gozo and Victoria is not complete without a track up castle hill to the newly-revamped citadel. Walk along the ramparts and enjoy stunning views or read a book in the shady ditch. Within the old walls you will find the imposing cathedral dedicated to Santa Marija. You can also visit the old prison, the Museums of Archeology and Natural Science among others while up here.

It-Tokk

Just down the hill from the citadel you will find Independence Square known to us locals as It-Tokk. Grab a cold beer here, sit down and watch the world go by. The Victoria local council offices are located in this square, as well as the Malta Tourism Authority office.

Il-Mandraġġ

From It-Tokk venture into the old part of Victoria with its narrow winding streets. Referred to as Il-Mandraġġ, have a stroll and marvel at centuries old houses and some intricate stone balconies.

St George’s Square

Surrounded by narrow streets and just a few meters away from It-Tokk you will come across St George’s Square another perfect place to stop for a snack. You must also pay a visit to the majestic Basilica dedicated to St George. Nicknamed the Golden Church this structure houses the statue of St George.

The Astra and Aurora Theatres

Walking down Victoria’s main street, Republic Street, you will come across the two opera houses, Astra and Aurora. Top theatrical productions are presented in both theatres and if you are in Gozo in October you must attend one of the operas.

Villa Rundle Garden

Right at the bottom of Republic Street you will get to Villa Rundle gardens also known as Il-Mall. An oasis of tranquility in the busiest part of Gozo.

St. Francis Square

Another busy part of Victoria, here you will find St Francis Church, the Ministry for Gozo as well as Tapie’s Bar. Here you must savour one of Gozo’s traditional foods, the pastizz. A cheesecake of sorts which you must wash down in one of Tapie’s tea-in-a-glass.

St Augustine Square and The Oratory

From St. Francis Square cross over to the west side of Victoria, through Vajringa Street where you will walk past the Gozo Public Library. St Augustine Square houses a monastery and The Oratory, the big imposing building in the corner. If you fancy a 7 aside football game, the Oratory Youths, one of Victoria’s three football teams, have an astro turf pitch right by the Oratory.

Lunzjata Valley

Although not part of Victoria, Lunzjata Valley is just a few minutes walk away from St Augustine Square. No words will do this lush valley justice. Relax to the sound of running water
